melianthus

I am in Dorset . Can I overwinter my Melianthus major under a tent of fleece? Or should I cut it back, pot it up and put it in the greenhouse ? It was planted this spring in a S. facing bed with the greenhouse behind it. It is about 3ft high.

I think it should be fine in Dorset, covering with fleece if going to be very cold.

Don't cut it back now, but leave it till growth is about to start. When I grew them, I cut them down almost to the ground and they re-grew fine. I grew them in pots, because it was too cold for them here.

    Beautiful plants.

How can you lie there and think of England

I've got one in the ground for 5+ years now. Its 'sheltered' by other plants though it does get frosted on its edges. Its survived 3 bad winters of snow in Rickmansworth, a known frost hollow.

Thanks for the input from you both. I shall risk it I think and be ready to throw some fleece over if it gets really cold.

Back to leaf raking and pond clearing now !
