Plant ID please

Can anyone put a name to this? I suspect that I don't want it as it looks as if it sprouts from an underground root system and seems to be popping up all over the garden since the cooler wet weather has come.

It's probably going to get the glyphosate treatment but I'd like to know what it's called before I get rid of it image

Either that pic or my eyes are a bit blurredimage

It looks like dandelion that's had the top chopped off several times and become multi-headed.

I assume a deep root that you can't dig up

Sorry, it's the picture not your eyes here's a slightly better one.

It's not Dandelion. The leaves are distinctly variegated and it seems to grow out from the centre in a rosette. The roots aren't long and tapered like a dandelion, more soft and fleshy like a bindweed but they broke off easily when I dug down a few inches.

If you dig it up does it come back?

I don't know. We've only lived here for a few months and this has only just appeared in the last few weeks.
  • Looks like a dandelion to me - probably damaged at some stage.

Looks like a dandelion to me too. I think it's tap root was damaged (slug or something) and it's had to develop new roots which meant it was deprived of nourishment during growth.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
  • Dandelions can also look like that if weedkiller has been used but then they were chopped off before the root was completely dead.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Aha, that makes sense. I have been battling with bindweed in that area. Maybe it caught a bit of overspray earlier in the summer.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Mystery solved I think image
