is it too late to overseed my lawn?

Hi my lawn which had new turf last autumn is patchy and was also mangled and churned last week when the tree pruners came in very wet weather.  I tried to overseed several times in the spring but the birds had every last seed no matter how much I sowed or how many times I tried, even put down netting but somehow they got through that.  As there are so many berries around at the moment I wondered if I could go under the radar and overseed now while it is still relatively mild, wet, and the birds are elsewhere.  Would it germinate at this late stage?  Thanks

  • if it was me i would re seed then cover the area with a light topsoil or compost to stop the birds from eating the seed, i did  that in the spring and it seems to have worked.

The temps are still quite mild, the gound is damp and we've apparently got a warm spell this weekend - sounds to me as if the time is ideal - I'd do it now. image

  • Thank you for your answers.  I was told by someone that grass seed needs light to germinate and not to cover it with compost or topsoil (hence it was always visible to the birds I guess).  They must have thought all their Christmasses had come at once!

  • if you dont cover it the birds will see it and eat it, if you do it now, cover it while it is still fairly mild, and wet it will germinate quicker. just my opinion. i have recently done mine and after all the rain and occassional sun it has started to grow already, did it approx 14 days ago.
