Can you recommend a hardy perennial climber?

Hi everyone, I live in Fife on the east coast of Scotland and I'm looking for a perennial climber to plant up against a north facing wall in a south facing garden. The wall is mostly in shade though it does get a good few hours of sun in late afternoon / evening. I'm brand new to gardening so really don't have a clue here - I would like something that looks good all year round and has a long flowering period. Also I would prefer something that can grow quite close to the wall, as I don't want anything too bushy. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Climbing hydrangea (H. petiolaris).  It loves the shade and clings to the wall itself so you don't need trellis or wires (although it will appreciate a little help while it's still small).  It has lovely creamy panicles of flowers in the summer and although it does lose it's leaves in lthe winter, I always think that the tracery of stems on a wall in the winter look really beautiful.

It grows close to the wall and can be kept trimmed back even more closely if needed. image
