When I did it, the prunings were probably from one or two year old wood. I'd avoid the very oldest wood but I don't think it's critical. Had to dig some rooted cuttings out as most took and I only have space for a few bushes.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
A Cordon is a way of growing a fruit bush on a single stem - it takes up less space so you can grow more plants in the same area and therefore get more fruit per square yard. There's a proper explanation and a diagram here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruit_tree_forms

Hello, I'm thinking of moving my gooseberry, it could be a good few years old, but I'm not too worried about it fruiting, it's got lovely russet leaves. I wonder how deep the roots go? How deep a hole do I need for it?
I might have a go at cuttings, do I just snip away with the secateurs?
I have just dug one of mine up and the roots seem to be about a foot or two deep and spread to about the same size as the bush with a few that are a big longer. I have done a bit of research over the last few weeks and seems that the hole needs to be twice the size of the root ball.
Hope that's good info, please correct me folks if I'm wrong
