Advice about the pond
in Talkback
Thanks for all your advice re:the Algae in my pond, I would now like to ask some advice regarding covering the pond over the coming months.
I have been advised to cover it with netting to reduce the build up of leaves etc..
Is it enough to get fine netting and cut out holes where the current plants are?
Many thanks again

I've just taken a large piece of garden netting, threaded two long bamboo canes through the netting on two opposite sides and placed the netting gently over the pond, including the plants. Every few days, when there's an accumulation of leaves on the netting I lift the netting using the bamboo canes and tip the leaves off onto the lawn and rake them up. The pond plants, even the tall ones, seem to survive unscathed.
I check the netting at least a couple of times a day to make sure no birds or animals have become entangled.

Yes I would like to cover my pond and really like your idea using netting & canes Dovefromabove, but am concerned about wildlife getting tangled. our pond is in great demand from badgers, foxes, birds, squirrels & bats and would hate to cause any harm.
Our pond is small and surrounded by large trees so for just a few weeks while the leaves are falling I have to either put a net over it and check it several times a day, or rake the leaves off the surface of the pond several times a day. But it's only for a little while.

What netting do u recommend for the best - I scoop oak leaves with a fishing net daily and I'm thinking this year some netting would be helpful.
I just purloined some netting from my late FIL's shed - black nylon and the sort you can buy off the roll - think he used it to keep pigeons off the cabbages. I've seen it sold by the metre in garden centres.
