In answer, I'd only mulch if the "soil" level has dropped and I'd use well rotted garden compost, or MPC , or a mix.
Carol, your MPC will have lost its nutritional value by now.
You need to top up the beds. I would use something with a bit more substance, well rotted manure would be good.
Some fertiliser would also be useful.
