over winter succulent

When do I stop watering my succulent for the winter?  Will they be alright in a cold greenhouse during the winter?

    Which succulent is it?

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • I cannot remember it's name, it begins with D, and the flowers are daisy like orange and white.

My succulents (all aloes) are in pots ad get brought indoors for the winter months. Is that an option for you?

I stop watering them regularly around about now and just give them a token watering about once a fortnight

I bring mine into a cold green house anytime now before the frosts.I don't water them throughout winter I find they usually have sufficient water in he surrounding compost  as they are all in a gritty free draining mixture I stand them on capillary matting  .

I drape a treble layer of fleece loosely over the entire plant or plants if they are put close  together tucking it round to keep them snug.

Might not work for everyone but it works for me.

  • Thanks all, some good points from all of you. I have an idea what to do now. And you were right with the name Victoria, I knew when I saw it.

It really is nonsense to say all succulents need winter protection. I have Delosperma cooperi growing on a west facing wall, happy for the last 4 years there! Also have sempervivum on wall and echerveria that remain outside all year with no protection. I live on the edge of Dartmoor! I simply plant them in very gritty compost, it's the wet which kills them.
