Suziepo, Niger seed is supposed to be sterile! Mine isn't; like you I have little plants growing, but I've been told that they don't survive the Winter. I believe the plant thrives in Ethiopia
I've put a feeder down the bottom of my allotment above the hedges. I've noticed that the sparrows will get the seeds out of it and the robins tend to feed on the seeds that fall on the ground . so would I be right in saying that they are ground feeders and nest near the bottom of the hedge. Might be a daft question but I'm new to all this
not sure if this will be any good to you guys, as im a bit of a scruffy gardener, but i use an old wheelbarrow which has a hole in it, i filled it with soil, pushed a stick in the middle, then hang the feeders on the stick, most of the seed falls in the barrow, i leave it to grow and sometimes add a bit of flower seed, its really good at keeping the seed off the garden
I don't have niger seeds, I did try but they seemed mostly to end up on the ground. I do have lots of goldfinches though and they spent much of their time on the sunflower hearts. They're supposed to be 'wasteless' which isn't so but at least the waste doesn't sprout. The sparrows like the sunflower hearts as well but have been going mad for the fat balls and my home made mix.
