making new fruit trees
in Plants
Hi I took some cuttings from an apple tree from my Uncles Garden as I wanted to grow a tree from them. The Apple twigs were cut below a node, but we don't know how to make new fruit trees from them. I am in an allotment association and we already have young apple tree growing on our site.
Is it the wrong time to do anything with them, and if so, should we store them and what would be the best way of doing that.
Thanks Kim Kendrick.

Thanks.
As you have already cut them you could try potting them up in a 50/50 mixture of grit and compost then put them somewhere sheltered for a few months and see if anything happens in Spring. The most successful way would be to graft them onto a rootstock but that's rather tricky and assumes you have a spare rootstock to hand or could get one quickly (unlikely.) Whatever you try, you need to do it immediately or they'll just die. I honestly don't think there's much chance of success with rooting the cuttings (aka scions) but why not give it a go?
some garden nursery centres sell Apple tree whips wich you can use for the rootstock, but I think it might be too late to do this year as the Trees are now going into dormancy for the winter.
