Sycamore with tar spot shedding leaves into my garden

At the bottom of the garden at each corner my two neighbours have self-seeded sycamore trees that are already over 30ft.  Both have tar spot and the leaves are blowing into my garden.

My worry is that they will affect my Acer palmatum atropurpureum which is a lovely tree and was well established when we moved here 25 years ago. The last couple of dry days I have been picking them up by hand so that I can use the other leaves to make leafmould.  I don't think I'll be able to keep it up for long though and I probably miss a few.

Am I over-reacting or could this be a real problem?

This is typical of sycamores. Just one of the reasons I dislike them. I don't think they will harm your ornamental Acers. It's also OK to use the leaves to make leafmould.

Thanks Welshonionimage.  The neighbours on both sides have both moved in within the last couple of years.  When I get a chance I will drop a few heavy hints as to what a nuisance their trees will be to their own gardens. They probably think the previous owners planted them. One is just a few feet away from their new greenhouse.

  • Well, the sycamores at the back of the houses opposite us were 40 feet when we moved here 12 years ago and now they're nearer 60, so perhaps you should talk to your neighbours in the spirit of co-operation and sharing knowledge rather than conflict!

I will do that Joe.  Everyone will benefit from the removal of these trees from the gardens, including other trees and plants that will get more light and moisture.
