The frost will slow down their growth but those spring bulbs are hardy in the UK so although they've got a bit of a head start because of the mild weather they'll be fine and you'll find them peeking through the snow (if we get any).
I'm afraid I don't know what caused the problems with you aliums - I've not grown them often and haven't come across any problems. I planted some this autumn so next summer I'll have my fingers crossed.
