Rapidly growing Acer in a small front garden

Hi, We have a lovely Acer tree which we planted in our front garden when it grew too large for its pot. We would like to trim it and wondered how we would or even should go about it
The decorations were for a birthday. Embarrassing!

I think you can lightly prune when it is dormant. November-February.
That looks like potential giant, not one of the delicate looking japanese maples.
Do you know what it is?
In the sticks near Peterborough
It looks like an acer palmatum atropurpureum to me Nutcutlet. Defo not Acer platanoides. Winter is the right time to prune as Charliebot has said. Just thin out the branches that prevent light coming in and try to picture the tree fully leaved and get a light shape out of it.
Thank you all for your welcome advice. I found the label that was attached when it was a delicate looking shrub and it says that it is Acer palmatum Bloodgood. The care advice is exactly as you have given so once again, thank you.
