Dividing Carex 'Evergold'

LoxleyLoxley Posts: 5,698

I'm normally pretty gung-ho about dividing plants (often straight out of the pot they were purchased in) but I'm pleased with the Carex 'Evergold' specimen I've acquired, and don't want to kill it.

The pot is crowded with multiple crowns. I'm not sure whether there's a solid 'heart' in there that might be better divided with a knife, or if the whole thing is more fibrous, in which case I'll rip / tease it apart. Anyone done this on their specimens?

I suspect division is probably best done in spring, but if I can get away with doing it now, I would definitely prefer that. Because I'm an impatient bugger!

Philippa, I think I my postpone... in fact I just put the plant in it's intended spot, and it actually fills the space nicely. I might try and tease off some divisions when it's settled in (say Spring) and mollycoddle them in my 'cold frame'.

It's a lovely plant, don't know why I haven't bought one until now. I've a spot for it with some harts tongue ferns, Luzula nivea and Geranium phaeum 'Samobor' and it fits in perfectly! The purple splotches on the 'Samobor's leaves make a lovely contrast with it.

Grasses are best split in Spring, That is when they make new root growth. They may just sulk if done now as they will not put out new roots until next year.

Cheers all. Glad to hear I'm not the only one whose impatience sometimes trumps good practice though!
