Can someone tell me what the plant above is please? It was an unexpected bonus in a batch of entirely different seeds I grew. image Also, does it need to be cut back or anything? I have another which I planted last summer and didn't trim this year and it got quite leggy.

  • Hi Alkoimage

The flower and seed pods are snapdragon. I can't quite make out the leaves underneath but they are two different plants.

As I understand it snapdragons are generally grown as half hardy annuals despite being kind of perennial. This is because they don't always look as nice as the first year.

Someone wiser than me will hopefully explain furtherimage

In very dry places in my garden antirrhinums go through winter. They are perennial but only nearly hardyimage

Could the plant it is growing through be "herb Robert"?

I can make out the leaves but not the stems.,these usually are tinged red.

I think there is some Herb Robert gran and possible some of the little annual euphorbia as well

and the Lonicera nitida, what's the name of that yellow cultivar?

I had a pair of L N B's Gold clipped into balls in my last garden. Much cheaper , and quicker then yew or box. ( and doesn't get blight)

Aha, Snapdragon - of course! Thank you everyone. image I think I'll collect some seeds and sow more in the spring.

It is a messy bit of the yard which gets forgotten about and it gets weeded twice a year if it's lucky. image The way I look at it is I'm doing my bit for the local wildlife!

I get Herb Robert absolutely everywhere. I've just done a Google search and apparently it has very good medicinal benefits and can be chopped and put into salads. http://therapybook.wordpress.com/2012/06/01/the-miraculous-healing-properties-of-herb-robert/ Quite interesting!
