End of the season thoughts

  • Hi Bob, like you I do all the landscaping in the cooler months. I have a boarder to extend, I want to put three rows of plants in next year instead of one like this year. They looked like a row in a firing squad!image

Work never stops in the garden just the focus changes with the seasons. Weeds keep growing, digging and manuring to do, some late planting esp the rhubarb to move in November. No life goes on in the veg patch all the year . Also have a few hundred daffs to re-plant. Garden shed only half cleaned up to-day.

Don't forget to collect the leaves!

  • I like to close the garden up by the end of this month and start again late February to early March.

I've just got one new boarder to go in in the next few weeks.

I've still to sort the winter troughs and pots, plant bulbs, pressure wash the path and patio which are green already and continue the war on creeping buttercups and bramblesimage  There's always leaves to clear off the lawn and now Victoria has reminded me to clear the pot mountain in the garage.  Thanksimage

Roll on spring and it will all have been worthwhileimage

Still got some bulbs and bare root plants to plant and a bit more tidying up.  The lawn will still get mown until the weather turns colder.  Ive got to move some plants indoors and I have seeds to plant to overwinter in the greenhouse.  Oh and I havent aerated the lawn yet.  I don't expect to do much in December and January though.

I like to keep gardening in the winter (apart from December, when other things take over).  I work indoors all week, so like being outdoors as much as i can at weekends, and the garden gives me a reason to be out there.

got so much weeding to do for the next few weekends, can't think about letting up yet. At least yesterdays rain will have softened the ground to make it a slightly easier task.

  • After only moving in to this house/garden in April and having a huge gap from when previous owners left, I am really hoping autumn will finally give me a chance to catch up. Also got myself some books to read in the evening so I can actually start understanding why I am doing stuff rather than just following instructions blindly. Also have been writing a 'log' as year has gone on so hopefully can correct the (many) errors from this year. Huge learning curve but loving it!

Cleaned out the garden shed the other day. Sowed some delphs and primroses - trying to start growing more hardy perennials.

I'll be clearing out the greenhouse soon and dealing with all the spiders in thereimage

  • I'll be sweeping up leaves for another month or two, sowing hardy annuals and planting bulbs. Even in midwinter, I like to wander around my garden and it's always surprising how much is actively growing. I have lots of winter flowering shrubs and bulbs and the first flowers can be blooming as early as January. I have resolved to do a proper tidy up and sort out all my pots this winter image but yes, will also be spending some time drooling over seed catalogues and planning how to revamp my borders.
