Just realised it is just as easy to take a fresh photo, looking a bit tatty (sorry) but it gives an idea.

As you can see work in progress, because there is still work to be done behind where I was standing - one dayimage

I like the triangular pockets - one day it will be brilliant!!!!!!!

I had the idea from a garden I visited called York Gate near Leeds

  • Thank you so much for the picture Matty, another good idea to play with, I do like the diamond idea.image

'one day it will be brilliant! That is exactly my mantra! If I say it often enough maybe it will happen. image

I've been saying it for 4 years - getting there - bit of a block about what to do behind where I was standing for the photo though. Several ideas but none seem quite right yet!!

Hi, I think a thyme which may be suitable is Thymus Serpyllum minimus. I use it between a path and the entrance to my greenhouse. It's very low growing2inches, 5 cm, spreads, has tiny leaves and pink flowers that the bees love , it also roots easily from cuttings Mine doesn't get full sun but grows well here on the NE England.

Love all the garden ideas here, best of luck

There are lots of lovely prostrate thymes. For bees, this year I was watching them and they chose a very dark one for preference, them a light mauve and ignored the white one altogether. I didn't like the white one eitherimage

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • Think it's going to be dark thyme then, sounds so good, better start some off now to give it a good chance of spreading. Can also put it in my yet to made rockery. image

Hello , have you thought about putting weed membrane underneath if you use gravel , let's the water through and helps stops the weeds , also any weeds that germinate are easily pulled up

you could plant some ground covering gerinums , but beware they will need cutting back on a regular basis

Bark chipping path look nice but difficult to weed without use of weed killer

whatever you do best of luckimage

  • Thanks GWRS, I have some (a lot in fact) of geraniums elsewhere and although they do a good job of ground cover you are right they certainly need regular trimming back. Someone on my other post had identified a good one to go between the roses which I am keeping an eye out for.

As for weed membrane have not had a lot of luck with it in the past, some weeds are so persistent and then when you try to pull them up through it they rip the stuff making it look a bit tatty. Hopefully, as it is such a mall path I will be able to keep on top of them as they poke through - do plan to sit up there daily with my morning coffee (she says). image

Are you a train lover btw, my son adores steam trains?
