magnolia tree dead?

Beaus MumBeaus Mum Posts: 3,554

my friend has asked me to ask about her magnolia tree;

It is the purple variety and this spring the tree didn't flower properly and the buds were very small and only half open. The leaves appeared very small and eventually died off after a couple of weeks. Not sure now whether the tree has died. I have attached a couple of photos.

    If it has looked like that since Spring I'd say its a Norwegian Blue magnolia image. However I would leave it until next Spring to see if there is any life left. You could scrape off a sliver of bark from a branch which did have leaves to see if there is any green tissue.

    Thank you steep hill, my friend did say she had tried the scrape test and yes it was green so do you think there is hope? image

  • Is that a new-ish fence by the magnolia?  If there's been some fencing work done nearby the tree roots might have been damaged and the tree might be taking a year off to recover image

    Do the nail check. Rub your finger nail on the trunk. If it is green underneath, then it is fine and should come back next year. If brown, then it is dead. Magnolia do suffer from branch die back when the roots are cut, so hopefully that is all.
