Dividing plants

I have canna lilies and want to divide them when is the best time to do this and what do I need to do to look after them during the winter months

    Dig them up after the first light frost and store somewhere frost free in dry compost.

    Split in Spring and pot the individual pieces up. I split mine this Spring just gone into about 4 separate plants from a large clump.

    I gave 3 of those away and the 1 I kept has formed a clump just as large. image

  • Someone gave me a canna lily in the Spring. I planted it into the garden. It  hasen't grown, it hasen't died!!! What shoule I do next???

    Have you looked at the roots to see if they're a bit pot bound and haven't opened out into the surrounding soil? That's sometimes the problem. They need a fair bit of food and moisture to get them growing well, but if they're 'stuck' they won't develop.

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

  • Tks Fairygirl &  Verdun...will dig it up to see what the roots are doing. I'll put it in a bigish pot over winter.
