TinglyTingly Posts: 140

i have to buy a climber to go over a 2m arch

do i get one which grows to 4m so it goes up one side and down the other?

or do i buy two- one for each side?

and if i buy two is it ok to mix so one fowers then another flowers later - was thinking evergreen clematis avalanchr and clematis amethyst if i do this

They don't climb down but you can tie them down.

A pair both going up would look more natural image

If you go for 2 different clematis consider the pruning requirements, trying to separate the growth of one that needs cutting back now, from one that needs cutting back then is a bit tricky

  • Hi Tingly image

Nope, they climb upwards - you need two, one for each side and they'll merge at the top.  And you chose which ones you like the look of, will grow to the height you need, will like the soil and situation (amount of sun/shade etc) and will look good together.

Sounds a lovely project.  It'd be good to see some photos when you've got it planted up image

  • And this is the best place to find things out - when I first came here I was surprised how much I knew - the longer I stay the more I discover that I didn't know image

Right then folks- heres my new question

i want 2 types of climbers, (two of each type) which flower at different times, which like clay soil, which have yellow leaves (to match a choiya and so i can see it from a distance) that doesnt mind being exposed (ooh matron(

    dont want much do i?

Ps when the plant selectors ask whether soil is moist or well drained - whats the answer? Mine is moist whn its rained and rock hard when its not- clay.

Hi tingly, roses love clay soil, would yellow flowers be ok rather than yellow leaves?
