Gossamer

Following a warm, dry night i noticed a huge amount of gossamer in my garden. there were everywhere, even from all of the cars in the street. there were strands floating about in the garden and more in town. Does anyone know what has prompted this?

Is there rosebay willow herb close by? You tend to get a lot of seeds from that.

Are you talking about fine spiders' webs?  It's the time of year, and the right weather conditions for small spiders to go ballooning http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYPABcMzbEg

There is a type of moth that produces huge areas of gossamer which can reach almost plauge proportions. It often literally covers trees (or cars parked beneath). Apparently, it doesn't actually do any lasting damage.

Thank you all for the responses. We don't have any rosebay willow herb so i think It must be 'ballooning' -just strange that i've never noticed it before and have lived here for 10 years! It must have been just the right conditions.

    Thanks again
