You cut off all the stalks when the leaves get frosted. Water pours out of them, so watch out.
You lift the rhyzome (which tends to be large) and store dry over winter. You can heavily mulch them but the new growth takes longer to get large outside of a green house.
tree dahlia, Dahlia Imperialis can grow to 6m, yes metres tall. I lifted most of mine last year as we have heavy clay soil in North Devon. About half those I left in the ground survived.I'd say if you have good free draining soil you could leave them in the groung. They are massive beasts to get out of the ground. I brought the seed back fromTamil Nadu in Southern India and they germinated with almost 100% success.
never heard of this before and just seen pictures of it. Its lovely, and have the perfect place for it, (Elec pole!) I only found one place that sells seeds, Chilternseeds. I wonder why other stockists don`t sell them. Do you just sow them like ordinary dahlia seeds?
Hostafan, do yours flower? I read that tree dahlias are harder to get to flowering in our climate. As I cant get acidanthera to flower, I think I will stick to bishops children.
mine hasn't flowered ( yet ) but the foliage is very dramatic. I read that Cambridge Botanics had one in flower last year after the long hot summer. I'm guessing leaving it in the ground over winter by a south facing wall in good free draining soil would be the best site.
Thank you every one for the advice, Hostafan1, mine is in a large pot in a south facing position, I have fed it seaweed feed for most of the summer and it seems to like that, I have read somewhere that it flowers in november? so hopefully if the weather stays nice and warm, i may get it to flower.
Angela17: its worth a look on Ebay, thats where I got mine,
