Asters.To split or not

My clumps of Asters(Novae Angliae) are looking less vigorous than usual.They have been in about 5years.Should I split them and if so when?

    I think they can be split every 3 years to keep them flowering well and early Spring is probably the best time to do it.

    Hi,

    I split mine into a single stem/root after flowering every year and dump the left overs!

    This way there is plenty of air around the plants and "no mildew".

    And they grow much larger flower heads into the bargain!
