Old guttering

Hi

Has anybody any ideas that I could use old guttering for?

I thought perhaps using them in rows against a wall with Strawberries growing out of them.

Any ideas I woyuld be grateful because it just seems a waste to chuck them away.

Thanks

Dennis

Hi Dennis - I think you'd struggle to get the depth for strawberries in guttering. You could try sempervivums, saxifrages and low growing sedums which don't need much growing medium  or attention, and will provide an all year round display. Mix grit in with the soil, make lots of drainage holes and site them in a sunny aspect and they should perform well   image

You can sow peas in guttering, before you slide sections out into the garden.

Otherwise it is too shallow for most things. It dries out very quickly.

Absolutely Welshonion - has to be something that thrives on thin air and neglect. That's why my sempervivums grow so well....image

Fairygirl, that's a good idea. Leaving aside that old guttering is a bit ugly!

(I've got my head down after saying that!)

If you angled it a bit and used some of the spreading sedums to trail over the edges, you could get quite good coverage I think. image

and maybe paint the guttering to tone in with the fence/wall it's going on image
