Sunflowers

I am an absolute beginner with my garden and this summer grew sunflowers in an effort to have something in my garden this year whilst not having the experience or time initially to get it all sorted.  My question is (apologies for my complete ignorance) I cannot find out what to do with my Sunflowers once they have bloomed.  I know all what to do with the seeds and the heads etc but is there a height that the stem should be or do I need to get rid of the stem entirely?  Any insight would be very much appreciated.

Hi Julie. Sunflowers are annuals, when they've seeded they die so pull them up and leave the seed heads hanging somewhere for the birds

  • Once the flowers have formed seeds I usually put them on the ground for the birds. As for the stems I add them to the compost bin. If you don't have a compost bin pop them in the green recycling waste. Sunflowers are annuals so they won't come back next year.

I use secateurs to cut the stems into short sections so they rot down in the compost.
