Spring is the best time. and you get to see the corkscrew over the Winter.

As they're grafted, they're inclined to send up straight suckers, so watch out for those too.

  • I'm frightened of winter rock. Do I prune right to the join on the main stem? And can I just reduce the height of some bits?

    How about a photoimage

It would give an idea of what needs doing

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • You can prune out the straight bits anytime and cut the others back on the longer side by as much as a half.  That said one in a front garden near me that was blocking the front room light was cut back right to the main stems all over one autumn and thrived!!!
