What exactly does a 'sterile' plant mean ?

    I have a plant growing in an awkward crack next to paving, that I assume is a seedling from the bowles mauve that was planted there. The flowers are yellow and pink rough stripes. I will try to get cuttings off of it. There is no chance of moving it.
