Thank you all so much for the truly lovely and supportive comments. It has given me huge determination to really get stuck in over the last two days. Unfortunately rest days are over and it's back to work for me so I am forced to leave the garden now for a while.
it is extremely tough being a single parent of two, running a house, working full time shift work, renovating a house and starting on a garden project. I don't have family/friends who are able to help out either so my time is pretty much taken up most of the day, every day. It will all get done at some point I'm sure. the most important thing to me is that I spend as much quality time with my daughters as possible. I don't have a perfect house or garden but I have two amazing kids so I can't ask for any more than that
Best of luck Donna - you have your priorities set right
And little gardens of their own for the girls will get them interested, and they they'll want to help when they get bigger. My daughter still talks about the patch she had when she was 4 years old - she grew nasturtiums one summer and the caterpillars came along and ate them all - she cheered up when I explained that what she had was a Butterfly Farm!!! She's 38 now and has her own lovely garden, and still grows nasturtiums - amongst everything else.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
My little one is 2 and already 'helps' with all the gardening jobs, planting, collecting leaves, composting, feeding chickens and collecting eggs, oh and mowing with his bubble mower. I've enslaved him young!
Ah thank you. There is another gnome lurking around the garden somewhere. The girls took them on an adventure all around the garden earlier on. They hand painted them a few months ago so it's nice to finally see them in the garden
My daughters chose the plants and helped me to get them into the pots earlier. They like getting muddy and being involved in the garden.
I think I'm going to tackle the rockery next job. That's the next thing that draws my eye when I look down the garden. Have no idea what to do with it yet. I will probably just take it all out and dig it over to give a bigger lawn area.
looking forward to getting more plants to bring more colour into the garden. i have re-potted some bamboo plants that I had but are looking very sorry for themselves. Soon see if they come back to life or not I suppose
Yes, I agree about the 'rockery' - not a thing of beauty at the moment! Put the rocks and stones in a corner somewhere so you can re-use them at a later date.

Donna - they won't be five forever, and it gets easier when they're able to fend for themselves a bit and allow you to spend more time in the garden.
Enjoy them being little - you won't get that time back. The garden will still be there
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Mine too Dove. Oldest still talks fondly about her 'hedgehog' plant. It was a dianthus I had next to a path which she used to stroke - hence the name
We now have these, and no prizes for guessing what they're called
Nasturtiums are great for kids - so easy and so rewarding.

After a bit of tidying up and a trip to the garden centre so the girls could chose a few plants
