Lawn advice

Hello! Looking for some advice on my lawn, it is full of weeds! Every time i mow it i also weed it but they just grow back within a matter of days! My front garden is just the same. Someone has told me it may be due to the land my house was built on (its a 6 year old new build).

I am looking for some advice on a product i could use to help kill the weeds but not damage the grass. I have tried the good old standard weed and moss killer that you buy in a box but it doesn't make any difference. Thanks, Kate

hi Kate. I have the same problem... new house, with lawn full of weeds. I don't think it was weeded properly before the turf was put down. Also we are surrounded by fields so the seed heads must blow in.

ive tried the granula weed and feed too, and whilst it's good on the big weeds it doesn't seem to tackle the infants. I also tried spraying directly with glyphosate which works but it also kills the grass around the weed.

my most recent attempt has been to water in a solunable weed killer. I was told by the chap at the garden centre that it makes the weeds grow madly and they sort of strangle themselves and the first cut afterwards with the lawn mower is a fatal beheading! this was three weeks ago. They did grow like mad, and we cut the lawn yesterday.  looks ok but I can still see lots of weeds.

perhaps autumn isn't the best time to do this. Most products tend to say spring. If you do find something that works please let me know!

You really need to use a weed and feed product in spring and regularly through the growing season if necessary. Reseed if there are a lot of bare areas due to moss and weeds which the product will kill off. Then mow regularly through the season - at least once a week - but don't scalp the grass. That's the mistake most people make, and all it does is weaken the grass and give weeds the conditions they like to thrive. Never take more than about a third of the length off at one time. That way, the grass is healthy and able to withstand the onslaught.  image
