The sweet rocket I grow is Hesperis Matronalis and I dont have any trouble with it spreading.  It pulls out really easy.  As Ive said I have good soil maybe its one of those plants that prefers poorer soil and that is why it seems non invasive in my garden.

  • That's great yviestevie, thank you for the tip. Can you recommend whether seed or ready potted is best please?

I grew Greek Basil in a block as a space-filler. Small leaves, 6 inches high and dome shaped. Lovely flavour. Better off in pots really. You do have to wait until the warmth of summer before planting out and Cabbage Whites just love it, but it is nice while it lasts.

Although not Greek, you could try dotting Night Scented Stock around, the evening scent can only add to the 'al fresco' ambiance as you sip your Retsina whilst snacking on Feta, olives, tomatoes and figs.  Ahhhh! What memories of holidays past.

  • Thank you Phillips - a large pot for the fig tree I think.

Thank you Mel. That's exactly the concept I want - pure escapism for the senses. I am making lots of notes from all the fantastic guidance you have all provided - I'm so excited for next year now.

could I please have some ideas for flowers/plants/shrubs that will add silver, white and that vivid red/orange colour?

I did think about adding a water feature but feel that may be a bit pretentious bearing in mind my location and space, so if anyone has any ideas for introducing sound to my garden - other than the radio - that would be lovely.
  • No, not at all..... I am so grateful for the advice. I really appreciate it as I know nothing whatsoever. Yes frogs, especially during certain, more romantic times for amphibians, would be quite disconcerting! And put me off my saganaki!

Windchimes - of course. If the countryfile forecast is windy they will be removed!

Now when you say protection, how best would I do this? Bring them into the outbuilding or cover them?

Now, as a font of all green-fingered knowledge, what are your ideas in regard to what flowers, plants, etc would introduce red/orange, silver and white? Now I'm being demandingimage

Ive got a small stone birdbath that has a small pump inside and bubbles water, it sounds really nice on a hot day and takes up very little room. By the way I grew the Sweet Rocket from seed its really easy and it self seeds every year.

  • Thank you yviestevie. My children would love watching that, and I am sure our frequent squirrel visitors would make use of it too. Can I ask, I don't have a green house, but was thinking of in the interim investing in one of those covered walk in ones - are they any good? I gather if i am to seed some varieties i should start in the next few weeks, but i am worried how to best nurture them.
