A new member to the site; as with most gardeners, all very friendly people!
mmm-good questions-my feeling is that a bird is going to have to find a poisioned ant-then eat hundreds- if not more- to feel any ill effect- if at all -so I wouldn't worry.

IT IS A LIVE CULTURE CONTAINING SMALL 'BUGS] THAT EAT THE EGGS AND REPRODUCE INSIDE THEM.
I ORDERED A 3 MOUNTH PROGRAM FROM EBAY, YOU GET A FRESH CULTURE AT 28 DAY INTERVALS, YOU ADD TO WATER AND POUR INTO NESTS.
SO FAR I'VE DONE 2 DOSES AND THERE IS A MARKED REDUCTION IN ANTS IN THE LAWN. IT IS DEFINITELY WORKING.
ALL OTHER METHODS I'VE USED WERE USELESS.
