Invasive Dodder Weed

Have just found this in a particular patch of one of our flower borders. Wasn't too sure what it was at first and it's most strange as it doesn't seem to have any roots nor does it touch the ground anywhere but it seems to be strangling it's host plant. Having surfed the net, it looks like it's called "Dodder" and is rather rare here in Europe. No ideas how it arrived in our garden but does anyone know of how best to get rid of it?

  • Thanks PF for your fast response, much appreciated.

It's growing on a Felicia & a Verbena. The latter I bought in a market in the UK (we live in France) and the Felicia is in it's 2nd year and we didn't have any problems then. At present I've cut both plants down to below where the Dodder was. Do you think this is enough or should I just hoick them out? Let's face it, it's not as if either plant is some sort of exotic hybrid.....................image

  • You have done enough Flowerpot Man.  Dodder doesn't infect plants like a disease does, it just attaches itself and sucks the sap.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Tkx Bob........  Will let you know if I see it elsewhere...........image
