Beech Hedging

Hi There

Hopefully someone can advise.

I planted a new beech hedge a month ago, 2 litre pot grown, 100cm tall. Some of the young trees have started to go brown, not sure if that's just normal for the time of year or if there's a problem. They seem to be drying out earlier than my established hedge.

All comments/suggestions welcome.

Best Wishes

Steve

     Hi There

Here's some images if this helps.

Quite normal, so long as they have enough water. They will hold the brown leaves throughout the Winter and cast them in the Spring

Looks normal to me tooimage  The younger plants do seem to lose more leaves but within a year or two they hang on to their leaves better. It may be an idea to take the longer horizontal shoots out now. It's only what I've done.  Other people probably know better.  Good luck Moomint.

  • Thanks Welshonion and LesleyK, good news! Could I ask one more question re. watering. Do I need to water now the plants are going dormant? Different people seem to have different opinions.

At this time of year you'd normally be able to water a bit less but, as you've only just planted them, you need to make sure they're not going short until they're nicely established. It depends how water retentive your soil is too.  In another month or so there will be enough rain to keep them going so just keep an eye on them for now. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I just wanted you to establish whether the leaves were browning as a result of Autumn or lack of water. It has been very dry with us recently.
