Choosing a damson tree
in Fruit & veg
We want to plant a damson tree this autumn in our woodland garden. It will get plenty of sun in the planned position. We don't want it to grow too large, but we are hoping for a prolific fruiter with good flavour for jam-making, crumbles, damson gin and so on. Any advice on which variety to choose and where to buy it? I gather it's self-fertile so we won't need two (and we don't have space for two anyway!)

I can recommend this nursery http://www.readsnursery.co.uk/categories/Plums-and-Gages/Damson-Trees/ - they are happy to answer queries by email. I'd be very tempted by the Blue Violet from the description, but I have no personal experience of any other than Merryweather which performed well for me in a previous garden, but the fruit was a little acid.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Thank you, Dovefromabove. I will check out that link. We tried Merryweather at Brogdale's Plum Day yesterday and weren't that keen on the flavour so it's good to know of others.
