Hi Bubbles - dried roots?? Doesn't sound very promising! Healthy asparagus crowns shouldn't appear dried, especially at this time of year. Ideally you should plant them when they're dormant (ie not growing) - in early spring, when they'll have a fat bud from which the new leaves will grow and roots a bit like spiders' legs. They need well-drained soil (a raised bed works well if you have clay), and hate competition from weeds.
If you google "growing asparagus" you'll find there's good information - especially on the RHS (royal horticultural society) website. It's not difficult but you do need to get the planting/weeding/feeding right.
Good luck!
Hi Liriodendron. Thank you for your information I will google the the site. the person who gave me them was giving up her allotment that is the reason they have dried out. what shall I do with them till Spring . I am making a new bed for them , but should I just put them in a spare bit of ground till then?
I'd try putting them in a spare bit of ground until spring, but maybe soak them first in a bucket of water for an hour, to see if they'll revive a bit. If they've really dried out there may be no life left in them, unfortunately. If they still look dried and shrivelled by spring you might have to bite the bullet & buy more...
Liriodendron, Thanks for all your help, will try your advice, and let you know in the spring any sucess.
Good luck!
