Insect pest of Viburnum Tinus

Tiny black insects 1mm long on the underside of my 12 ft high Viburnum tinus. They are rapidly devastating it. What the devil are they please?

thanks, tom

Viburnum beetles. Spray with a good insecticide and keep spraying. Try to remove any leaves with pupae on them too.

  • White fly also infest the underside of Viburnum tinus they leave black scales and aphids love them. Wash down and remove badly infested leaves. They do not need pruning though removing old damaged or dead wood helps. If you spray use the spray pointing up to get the underside of the leaf, I know daft but some do use sprays wrongly.

    Frank.

  • They are definitely not viburnum Beatles, or whitefly. All I can find on the undersides of the leaves are these minute black insects that walk when you push them with your thumbnail. I am using a systemic pesticide which I would prefer not to of course- but the plant is so damaged I worry that the leaves cannot even take the pesticide in.

  • Nope. I'll post a pic shortly, many thanks all!

The only other outdoor pest of Viburnum is the Viburnum aphid which attacks other Viburnum, not normally V. tinus and they have usually done their damage and disappeared by this time of year.

There are black aphids which is what it might be, in which case the insecticide should clear them. However they do not normally do that much damage unless in huge numbers and then they are usually found on the growing tips rather than the underside of the leaves.

Sorry I got it wrong at first.

There are thrips which attack them under cover. There are also scale insects, but they are off white.

  • How do i upload a picture? despite using computers for YEARS - i can't figure out how to do this...

click on the tree in the toolbar,

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • Click on the little tree icon at the top of the reply box and it gives you the options to browse for your picture. There might be a size upload limit but you'll know how to resize won't you? Good luck I'll watch to see how you get on. image
