Is a butler sink the same? This photo taken a couple of years ago - now is completely covered in echeverias, euphorbia myrsinites (at the back) and various forms of houseleek.  I don't water it and have gravel surrounding all the plants.

It stands on four coffee jar lids to keep it off the ground and I absolutely love it.  Didn't buy it, inherited it along with a smaller apothecary sink from my Auntie Lily.  I take the echeverias into the unheated greenhouse in the winter, but the rest stay put.

A Belfast sink has a weir-type overflow.  A Butler sink (sometimes called a London Butler sink) does not have an overflow.

  • Oh - this one is from London, always known as a Butler sink and it does have an overflow - perhaps they were just known by different names if they were made in different potteries?

It serves my "mediterranean" garden well - succulents, echeverias, sedums, and houseleeks all thrive, and I am able to pass on the extras each year to friends who want to copy it

  • Now I see why my original thread was bumped up for you SP.  As pointed out, we all like different things but personally I love my Belfast sinks and really don't care if others don't agree image

I have 3 and it cost me £5 for all 3 so a real bargain, a little bit of TLC, but not too much and they look lovely.  My alpine one is my favourite, the one by m y back door is most disappointing and I am in the process of deciding what to do with that one.  The one at the front of the house I plant for the season so will be doing autumn/winter soon.

I think they make a real feature and add more depth to the garden than just regular round pots everywhere (which if course there is nothing wrong with as I also have lots of those)

And yes, Lily is right, my mum has also just given me a tin bath.  Nothing done with it at the moment and can't decide whether to just use it as a water collector (Month style LOL), a mini pond or plant it up???

Gardening Granny, yours is beautiful, I hope mine looks like that one day image

  • I would like a chimney pot next.....or maybe 2 image eBay here I come image

  • Bidding on a chimney pot image I think gardens aren't just about plants to make them beautiful, many other inanimate items can add depth and beauty to a garden......pots don't just need to be pots they can come in many forms image

So, once I've got the chimney pot what else could, I add?? image

  • OL, think we like the same things!! Lol

Would love a chimney pot. I also want a half barrel and a statue or two.
