weeds weeds and more weeds

Hi I have a house in Bulgaria that I intend to move into next spring. I have just visited it and it took 4 hrs to hack a path to the front door, through brambles, wild roses,a lot I cannot name and amazingly hops which are everywhere.

What is the best way to clear a large patch like this.I am completely new to gardening but will be retired so time is not a problem, not too fit though.

Congrats on your new house image

It really depends if you want to use weed killer or not, its not for me, so i would start close to the house, do a little each day, dont overdo it or you will end up very sore and pig sick of gardening! You will be amazed, it feels like you are getting nowhere but all of a sudden you realise you are making progress image

If you arent able to plant up the bits you clear straight away, cover it with black plastic, carpet, cardboard -anything to exclude light image
  • I think I'd be looking for recommendations for a local gardening/odd job chap or chap-ess to get it clear between now and when you move in.

Make sure they understand that you won't pay unless all roots are properly removed.  Also make sure that they know they must not use residual weedkillers as you want to grow things there.

Good luck - quite an adventure you've got ahead of you image

  • Get a brush cutter Allan.  Petrol one, and plenty of petrol. The only way to do it really, even in Bulgaria they will have them. It's the only way to tackle large overgrown area's, or hire someone in to do it for you. Overgrown area's need clearing in the first instance and you can decide what you want after that.

  • Thank you all for your suggestions I like the idea of a brush cutter but there are lots of low concrete and stone walls hidden within all the brambles etc so I think the small bit at a time solution is probably the best ,I also will use weed killer as I am happy to wait before planting out...any suggestions as to the best killer to use and also the best time of the year to use it

  • I think I'd use SDK brushwood killer or similar.
