I thought I had one like yours until I saw the beautiful pics. Mine was from a mixed packet of poppy seeds, three came up, very dark purple, bright scarlet and pink and white but more white than yours. See if you can gather the seeds, will it come true next year??!! Good luck.
The flower has fully opened now, so I'll go out shortly to take more photos. There are also another 3 buds looking like they will open soon
fidgetbones, I had a look at Angels Choir, very pretty, but they appear to be double flowered. My poppy is single flowered.
Cangrandmafixit and Warthog, yes, I'll be collecting seeds. Are root cuttings the only other way to propagate poppies ? Never done that before.
If this is P.commutatum, that's an annual isn't it ? So it won't come back up next year. So I'll have to save seed for next year and hope it comes true.
LesleyK It usually takes me a while to think of forum usernames, but this time, I had a bit of help.
I just can't get over how beautiful this poppy is.
Edited to add - P.commutatum are the only poppy seeds I've bought/sown this year. The ground my poppy is growing in is a brand new flower bed which I made myself in May this year. Ground was previously a grassy slope and had been for at least 20 years.
The soil in my flowerbed is a mixture of the original soil from under the grassy slope, coir and Miracle-Gro multi-purpose compost.
There are plenty of field poppies growing nearby in surrounding fields, but I've never seen any poppies like this one in anyone's gardens anywhere in the village.
I've just been out and taken more photos. Traced the stem of the poppy down to the ground, and it is definitely growing from where I'd sown P.commutatum "Ladybird" seeds in June.
This is currently the only one I have. I've posted a photo of it on twitter and asked the nursery who I bought the seed from if they have grown anything similar.
I was expecting Red poppies with black spots on the base of each petal. This one is a surprise.
