Worst year for rust

nodlisabnodlisab Posts: 414

Every year I grow lots of Fuchsias for baskets but this year nearly every plant has been affected by rust, I have never known it so bad. Anyone else had this problem?

Yep, I go with that Bas.

They wont die completely because I had this last year as well, just strip all the leaves off, give a spray of rose anti fungal spray and they will come up next year.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

Same here and the black spot could bring tears.

  • My dad showed me his fuchsias this weekend and even the new growth has got rust on it

I have noticed that some varieties of fuchsia seem to be badly affected by rust, whilst others are still beautifully green and flowering their heads off. I'm going to collect up as many affected leaves as I can and then spray with a fungicide as a protection next year - rather than use it when the problem's already there.

Worst I've seen, have a real problem with one particular variety "Heron" in borders, completely defoliated in August but in good growth now and flowering, others very little and some no trouble at all. Didn't prune hard this year because of the mild winter so thought that may be a factor.

  • Yes all my Fuchia s are exactly the same yellow rust seems to be everywhere I look !  However I notice that the ones I removed to a cooler spot are coming back into leaf again and looking much better !
