I use root trainers. I been using the same set for 3 years so they have lasted if your careful. I find they work great as you can start sweetpeas in september leave the in a cold frame. I have always had good strong plants with good root systems.

Use the paper towel tubes cut a bit shorter (not as short as toilet paper tubes), fold them into a square (from the top view.. put four edges on your circle), cut along the folds up about half an inch on one end and fold those under so your soil doesn't drop out as easy.  Fit the square tubes together into some sort of rectangular deep container that has holes on the bottom, fill both the tubes and around the outer edge if they don't fit flush with seed soil right up to the top, water and fill in more soil as it's settled.  Just leave the tiniest bit of tube above the soil level (less to mold, or wick away water once planted).  When you're ready to plant out, I usually use a pair of scissors to clip away any tube above soil level just prior to planting, so there is none exposed once it's in the ground.  I also usually unfold the bottom flaps to allow the roots to grow out better.  The squareness of the tube also helps direct the roots down once they reach a corner (just like those fancy pant root trainers.

I've just made a set out of some strong A4 paper, folded round and stapled.  I have loads of it and they are 3" across and presently 11" long and several different colours to match the eventual flowers.image  I'll fold one end in a bit once I've measured the hanging baskets they will go in eventually

Hi, I'm quite a rookie to grow things so please be bear with my lack of knowledge! I just bought a deep roottrainers to grow some peas (Hurst green shaft) indoor. Planted into the roottrainers 8 days ago and virtually all grew 1 to 2 inches now. when shall I replant them to outdoor? Any tips would be appreciated. Many thanks
