Coreopsis Limerock Ruby

Hi, fell for this coreopsis at the garden centre. Photo doesn't do it justice. It's the most gorgeous autumnal dark red.  Can you tell me if it is unadvisable to plant it in my clay soil.  Would it be better off in a pot in my border and if so how my grit should I mix in?

if it can go in the ground, ought I wait til spring to plant?

That looks nice in the pot Snoodle. I've had trouble getting these through winter on fairly light soil. Lots of that grit and spring planting is the way I'd go. Or keep it in the pot

I had one that flowered its socks off all summer on clay, but it died over winter.image

  • Hi Nut.  It's only balanced in the pot at the moment, but it does indeed look good.  Ill put it in properly and keep it potted over this winter at least then.  Perhaps I could take some cuttings and experiment with them in future years.  Are they easy from cuttings? Or perhaps divide?

A quick online check suggest that this plant does well in sandy, clay or normal soils. Apparently the optimum soil conditions are mildly acidic.

  • Mine died last winter- all the fancy ones didimage

They were in the ground though, clay based, perhaps a bit too wet.

I've never had one live long enough to propagate Snoodleimage

But I haven't had that one, maybe it's tougher

  • Soulboy, my online check suggested a gravel garden, whilst another said any soil. image hence often easier to ask on here and get people's experience.  hoping you're righ though - my soil is a bit acidic.

definitely in pot.  Definitely in greenhouse over winter.  And will see what I can do about cuttings.

    Ta all!

Oh dear.  I bought a coreopsis this year which is a beautiful deep pink ,so does that mean I have to dig it up and keep it somewhere sheltered overwinter?
