Pond pumps and water features

Hi,
I'd like to introduce a water feature in my garden. As I have two toddlers it has to be safe so I was thinking of something along the lines of a small pool (maybe only 60cm wide) filled with pebbles with a fountain in the middle.
However, I don't have a clue what sort of fountain/pump to buy or even how they are powered. Any thoughts/experiences would be welcome!

You can buy a pebble pool kit which will have the water reservoir and a pump. Easy option if unsure.
