A Fountain question!

I have a fountain to set up (one of the stone spheres) and it has a 30mm drilled whole for the water to rise out of. The pump that I have has a pipe diameter of around 13mm, any wisdom as to how to get this to work? Are there adapters?

  • They should come with all the parts you need and assembly instructions Steve, or did this one have a previous owner?

  • This one is new but doesn't have an adapter. Doesn't come with a hose either!

  • Does the sphere have just a hole bored in it or is there some sort of connection at the bottom?  If the former, you need to seal the end of the hose from the pump into the hole at the bottom so water can only come out of the top.  I would have thought it would have a kind of bung for that.  If the latter, can you take a photo of the connection?

I'm assuming it is a low-power pump which is submerged in a sump below the ball and only has enough power so that water runs gently out of the hole at the top and down the outside of the sphere.  If it is meant to shoot water up to some height out of the top of the sphere, it won't need to be sealed at the bottom and you can just shove the hose up the hole so it is a few inches below the hole at the top.

  • It didn't come with a bung, I was wondering if a red rubber one for brewing (they come in 31mm) would do the job!

  • Sounds perfect - drill a hole in the bung to suit the diameter of whatever hose you can find to fit the pump (sounds like 1/2".)  Drilling rubber is easier said than done though! image

You could also seal it in using silicone sealant which might be easier - shove a few inches of hose in, squirt some sealant all around the gap between hose and hole and wait a day for it to set.

  • That was option two!

Googling has revealed 32ml hose that I suspect would fit tightly with a bit of huffing and puffing! Plus there are commercial hose reducers of assorted sizes.

  • Shame to have to buy extra bits though!  Sounds like you have another digging job on the cards for the sump - I remember your effort on the pond! image

  • Sump is already dug (you can see in some of the pond pics), just need to put wiring for pump and work out the pumping piping dilemma and then Thunderbirds Are Go!
