water borne diseases

I need some advice please. On my allotment site a member has claimed that another member who rescues bees from water butts with a stick is spreading plant diseases across the site. Is this correct?

No!! Water butts should be closely covered at all times, but that is not because of bees dropping in,
  •  What disease? How?

  • Thanks. Agreed they should be covered. However, the issue is not the bees, but the stick used to rescue them, which, it is claimed, transfers diseases from one butt to another. Who knows?

  • no,  what it will do is kill yet another valuable be. Stagnant  water is more likely to attract midges.

  • There was a programme on Radio 4 this week about the spread of mosquitos, including possibly malarial ones, as the climate changes. I only caught a bit of it and you've reminded me that I meant to look for it on 'listen again'.

My feeling is that all these organisms surround us all the time and we make things worse by trying to eliminate them. All we do is eliminate the easy ones and upset the balance.

  • Thanks Buddy Boy, that's a useful response that will give the allotment committee food for thought.
