What's wrong with my tree

My Laburnum flowered really poorly this year, and there were no show of leaves, except for a few small ones, that looked like they were just starting to show from bud.
I have just had to cut a few small branches off, as they died.
What is the cause of this, and will the tree recover for next year?
I have only had the tree in the ground for a year now, as it is a young tree and I had to move it from the front of the house, due to having to gravel my front garden over to make room for extra space for my daughters car.

It really doesn't sound very happy. Has it had any proper leaves at all this summer? If not I would presume it's dead.

It doesn't sound very happy, but I thought my laburnam was dead after getting rocked by the crazy winter winds. I have to cut all the branches off. It was a dead trunk until last month when it started showing life. So maybe leave it until next summer and see if it comes back. I was surprised mine is still trying to thrive.
