What's wrong with my Hebe

We dug out a new flower bed a few months ago - it once was the home of an ancient Forsythia hedge.  Anyway, we decided to put a Hebe Midsummer Beauty in and up until recently it was doing very well.  Lately, it has started to wilt in places and looks very poorly, I thought it was lack of water but now I'm not so sure.

Any ideas?

I always thought this Hebe was relatively robust and we have plenty in the area, we're on chalk with lots of added compost.  We mulched it with bark, could that be leaching something into the ground?

Have you planted anything else in there as well which means competition for water and nutrients?

They're usually fairly straightforward unless they're in soggy ground or too much shade which you don't seem to have there. It could just be suffering from lack of water with the dry summer - new plants do need a lot if the ground's light, until they get going. Stick your finger down into the soil and see if it's very dry beyond the top inch or so. Try that before lifting and checking for vine weevil, or anything more drastic like that.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

  • Ah, the dreaded vine weevil - I'd forgotten about them, thanks for reminding me.  image All is well as far as water etc is concerned so we've lifted it and put it in a large pot for now.
