cut back/ prune?

I have inherited an overgrown Tamaris. Lovey , but looks a mess this year.

Can I cut branches back?  or do I just prune? and when can I do either?

Dont want to loose it , but it is invading other plants and growing over to nieghbours garden.

You can tidy it up now and then in spring give it a hard cut.

  • I 've got 2 tamarisk in my garden. Both flower in the Spring about May time. Once they have finished flowering, I cut them really hard back...  looks awful after the hard prune for a couple of weeks than new growth starts. Both have given me a good show of flowers every year. To date they are both alive!!!

  • Thank you Forester2 and  Fluffy Cloud for helping me out here. Couldnt get back to you before now.  There is always something taking up my time other than the garden!! I will give my plant a real good cut back.  It cannot look worse than it does at the moment. It has looked really beautiful in the spring, but so overgrown.

I'm sure I will be back wanting more advice in the future.  What a great site this is!
