I don't know if this as been done before  but this year because my wife as been showing more intrest and picking a few vegies and toms  I didn't want her to get hurt so I put some empty cartridges over the tops of the canes ,they come in loads of different colours reds ,whites ,yellows,green,blues, all colours that stand out and they cost nothing if you go down to your nearest clay pigeon shooting ground they will let let you have as many as you want! I hope this helps and if it saves some one from getting hurt then hey ho.. you can google your nearest clay shoot..

    I make pom poms out of anything, wool, string- whatever, then bing them to the tops of the canes image

    I use small plastic bottles they don't blow off so easily and the base is large enough so if your face does come into contact when you bend down its unlikely to cause any damage

    I use corks from bottles of cava - they are fatter than normal corks and rounded at the top. You do need to drill a hole in them first though, so you can push them onto the canes.  image

    Pansyface - it wouldn't be half finished. You can't REALLY leave bubbly wine or it will go flat - that's my excuse anyway!!!!    image  image

    I used to save 35mm film canisters in pre-digital camera era (last millennium!). Nowadays I improvise with empty plastic pill & yogurt pots, odd sox and even empty 'jungle juice' or jubbly plastic sleeves with a rounded, closed ends. Fascinating to hear of others' improvisations.....???
