Viola help

Hi there

if some of my violas have turned to seed already due to me not potting them out due to family reasons, as in still in there seed trays, is it still worth me doing it?

Not quite sure what you're asking Nick. Do you mean - is it still worthwhile potting them up? It won't do any harm, they'll still establish and grow on in the pots image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Yes that's it

I've been so busy and haven't had time to do them.

is it just basically to cut the heads of which have turned to seed

  • Yes mate , cut tge heads off and they will soon be flowering their little socs off, if the seed they have produced is ready, dont waste it image
  • Socks not socs!
  • I must admit if I cut the dead heads off it returns them to stalks is that alright

  • Yes, it looks a bit odd, but unless you are very unlucky, they will come back like new image, if you feel a bit weird about it, plant them up, just cut every other one back, then do the others when the ones you have cut grow back image
  • Sorry for typos, it appears my brain and fingers arent talking to each other!image
  • I'm like that all the time

They will be fine Nick, cut the whole lot

back to an inch and pot them on. You kow if the seed heads are ready, they pop at the slightest touch. You can have lots more by next year.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Ok I'll get them planted up and just cut the heads off for know
